Oral health impacts one’s overall wellbeing. It takes an excellent dental hygiene routine to keep teeth clean and shining. However, people often forget that part of keeping the mouth healthy is caring for the gums.

Gums are considered the foundation of a healthy mouth. If a person does not pay much attention to gum health, they are at high risk of developing oral and even heart health issues. Sixty percent of people experience bleeding gums, and one out of three people believe that having bleeding gums is normal, says Dr. Kami Hoss. Gums may bleed without a person noticing. However, one must take action to prevent the bleeding from becoming a more advanced form of gum disease.

Harmful plaque causes the gums to bleed, which have millions of bacteria in it. Plaque can be found around or at the gum line. When left there, it can lead to gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease that, if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis. A person should never ignore bleeding gums as it can be a sign of other serious conditions such as vitamin K deficiency, hormonal changes, leukemia, or scurvy, explains Dr. Kami Hoss.

Other causes are new flossing routine, poor oral habits, a new toothbrush, poor diet, and stress. If a person notices bleeding in their gums, they should consult a dentist immediately. Doing so can help one have better oral health and hygiene.
