Top 4 Reasons Why Braces for Adults are a Great Idea
For Dr. Kami Hoss, age shouldn’t deter you from getting the oral or dental care that you need. Nowadays, it’s no longer surprising to see a fully grown man or woman in full braces. It’s not even uncommon to see both parents and kids wearing braces at the same time. So if you’re an adult and you’ve been putting off wearing braces because you’re embarrassed, don’t be; a lot more adults are finally realizing the importance of such dental appliances to correct teeth and/or bite issues.
Reasons adults get braces
1. Fix crooked or misaligned teeth
You may have had perfectly straight teeth in your younger years (maybe it was an inborn gift or maybe you wore braces in your teens), but now that you’re older, you can see that your teeth have started to look skewed, crooked, or misaligned. According to Dr. Kami Hoss, this is because teeth can move or shift at any time or at any age. It could have been caused by a health issue or injury, or it could also simply be part of the aging process.
Whatever the reason, the fact remains you now have crooked teeth. And just as you wore braces in your younger years to get your teeth aligned, so should you get them now to correct your alignment issues.
2. Fix your bite
Just as teeth can move as we age, so can you experience changes in your bite or jaws as you age. If you suddenly have an overbite or your childhood overbite/under bite has become an issue again, braces can correct this. If you have ringing in your ears or you hear a sort of “cracking” sound from your jaws when you open your mouth or when you chew, it could be an issue with your teeth, bite, or the jaw itself. If you are experiencing these, it’s best to consult your dentist or an orthodontist, suggests Dr. Kami Hoss.
3. You can finally have a perfect set of pearly whites
Let’s face it, braces don’t come cheap; and for a lot of adults, this means not being able to get them when they were younger because they couldn’t afford it. But now that they have a stable job and income, they can very well afford to get the dental care that they’ve been putting off for years. Finally, after decades of living with their imperfect teeth, they can have these issues corrected. Having the perfect set of teeth is enough to boost one’s self-confidence, says Dr. Kami Hoss.
4. Address certain health issues
Last but not the least, adults are advised to get braces if they suffer from frequent headaches, experience a ringing in their ears (tinnitus), or earache. These health issues could have been caused by misaligned teeth or incorrect bite.
These are some of the more common reasons why adults get braces, but whatever the reason, if your dentist recommends that you get braces to correct a dental issue, do not let your age prevent you from benefiting from this corrective measure, reminds Dr. Kami Hoss.
